PRE-K - K
Maternelle: Cycle 1
There are three levels of pre-elementary classes in Maternelle: Pre-Kindergarten, Mid-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. Children are placed in the section which best corresponds to their developmental age; typically, age three in PK, four in MK, and five in K. All of our Maternelle classrooms have full-time teacher’s assistants so that each child gets ample individual attention.
a. Pre-Kindergarten and Mid-Kindergarten
In a warm and gently structured setting, children are immersed in French language and culture so that they soon become comfortable with it. Children have the option of expressing themselves in English until they feel comfortable enough to try their first words in French.Through songs, games, art and creative play, each child’s academic and social development is nurtured. An American teacher spends an hour per day with the class developing oral skills in English. Children in PK and MK follow a carefully balanced schedule which alternates indoors and outdoors, as well as group and individual activities. A rest period is scheduled after lunch.
b. Kindergarten
Greater emphasis is placed on phonemic awareness, reading readiness and beginning mathematical concepts. With a short period each day devoted to individual concentration in an academic activity, students begin to acquire self-discipline and study habits. Music, art, gardening and creative movement are an integral part of the program. The children are encouraged to express themselves as much as possible in French. As in preschool, English is taught one hour per day.
